In a classic case of passing the buck, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre continued to play ball over the issue of the proposed value added tax (VAT) that would be imposed on the Agra footwear industry.
In a reply to Rahul Gandhi’s plea to the state government on Monday to waive off VAT on the Agra leather footwear industry, Mayawati said here on Tuesday that the rates proposed in the VAT were fixed on the recommendations of the committee formed by the Centre and were implemented in the adjoining states. Therefore, the statements of the opposition were aimed at creating confusion and to gain political mileage.
