MakeMyTrip, a leader in the Indian online travel space, has become the first travel company in India to offer travellers the opportunity to reduce their impact on the environment and travel responsibly. Air passengers booking tickets on the website receive an estimation of their carbon footprint for the journey and the opportunity to offset it by contributing towards aforrestation programmes run under the aegis of GiveIndia by Seva Mandir in Rajasthan. GiveIndia is a donation platform that allows donors to support a cause of their choice from about 200 NGOs that have been scrutinized for transparency & credibility.
Deep Kalra, Founder & CEO, MakeMyTrip elaborated on this unique offering, “At MakeMyTrip we have taken great pride in leading the industry to provide the Indian traveler with more choices, greater flexibility and the opportunity to do more than the usual. With our new green initiative, we are happy to assist travelers in finding a way to travel responsibly.”
MakeMyTrip has witnessed an enthusiastic response to this initiative from travellers. In just a month since launch, the programme has resulted in collection of over Rs. 2 lakhs, used entirely for planting trees. On ground, this translates into the planting of 18, 000 trees and a green cover of 50,000 square feet. Mr. Kalra explained.
“Travellers have responded very favourably to this green initiative, demonstrating that they are aware of their responsibility to the environment. Not only have a significant number adopted this initiative within a month of its launch, a quarter of the contributors have chosen to make the maximum-possible donation. To us this underlines how an individual can be empowered through a great idea – which is what MakeMyTrip has always stood for.”
