Kerala government will ask the Centre to either ban or strictly control the future trading in rubber trade, Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac said in the assembly on Friday.

High fluctation in the price of rubber and subsequent crisis in the sector was an example of how the future trading adversely affected the agriculture sector in the country, Issac said while replying to a submission of V K Vasavan (CPI-M).

The price of rubber was on a downward trend even at a time of good production, he pointed out. Future trading in rubber was opposed by tyre manufactures, growers and traders, he said adding ‘only a group of speculative persons’ wanted future trading.

Vasavan pointed out that price of rubber came down by Rs three recently and attributed the reason to the future trading in the sector.
