Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata, which is going to start its operations in April this year, is waiting for more funds of Rs 15-20 crore to start its robotic surgery, the first of its kind in India, in the near future.

At present, the institute would do endovascular surgery, functional neurosurgery, deep-brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery among others, said chairman of the institute RP Sengupta.

“We have fot Rs 35 crore and waiting for another Rs 15 crore for the institute. All these funds will be raised through donations,” Sengupta told reporters in a press conference to announce the start of the institute’s operations this April. The institute, which has 150 beds, is set up on 50 acres provided by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

When asked about the charges that the economically deprived patients have to shell out, Sengupta said: “About 20% of the beds of this hospital will be reserved for people below the poverty line. They will get top class service at a nominal rate.”
