The Gujarat High Court on Friday extended the stay on the arrest of senior IPS officer Kuldeep Sharma till August 23 in connection with an FIR lodged against him by CID (Crime) in a 26-year-old encounter case.
Sharma had moved a petition in the HC to get the FIR quashed and the court had earlier directed the state government not to arrest him till Friday. The HC had also issued a notice to the state government and the original complainant in the case.
On Friday, the complainant?s lawyer had sought time to make written submissions. Following this, the court adjourned the hearing till August 23 and extended the stay on Sharma?s arrest till then.
The case dates back to April 10, 1984 when Umar Wali Mohammed Mokha and Fakir Mohammed Buta Mokha were killed in an alleged fake encounter on the outskirts of Vamora village of Kutch district by the district police. Sharma was the district superintendent of police then. Two days before the encounter, other three members of the same family were reportedly picked up by the district police and were never found.
While challenging the complaint on technical grounds, Sharma has alleged vendetta against him by Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
