The next time you want to have a brainstorming session with your colleagues based half way across the world, or want help on a project, you may not need to send half a dozen emails or post a memo. Companies now have to option of switching over to enterprise social computing which offers its employees all these facilities and much more.

Simply put, enterprise social computing is similar to what Orkut and Facebook are, except that it is available only to employees of a particular company. They include features such as Mash ups, wikis, blogs and search.

The service, provided by BEA Systems, under its Web 2.0 technology with its range of Aqualogic products was launched in July this year and is already catching on. ?In the last few months, many companies-mainly from sectors such as financial services, retailing and telecommunication companies- have chosen to use this technology,? Ajay Gandhi senior director, product marketing business interaction division BEA Systems said at the BEA World 2007 organised in Shanghai.

Added Rosanne Saccone, senior vice president marketing BEA Systems, ?We are the first company to provide enterprise class social computing.?

Enterprise social computing allows companies to increase collaboration amongst its employees and also upload web content very easily, Gandhi pointed out.

Such social software also helps improve worker productivity and user driven innovation. The whole idea behind this software is to increase transparency within the organisation and also break down hierarchy of the company by easy and open interaction on the web, Gandhi added.
