Efficient energy use can save almost 125 lakh units of electricity daily in the state the construction and energisation of a new power-generating projectfor which would cost Rs 2400 crore and about three years’ time.

It was stated by Ashok Lavasa, financial commissioner and principal secretary (power), Hrayana, while emphasizing on the need of energy conservation on national energy conservation Day on Friday.

He said that the energy consumption in buildings constitutes about 33% of the total energy consumption. This consumption is expected to be equivalent to combined consumption of industries and transportation by 2050. As a result, government is formulating norms to promote the efficient use of energy in buildings.

As per the Electricity Act 2003, the government recommends energy conservation in commercial buildings. Further, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has released the Energy Efficiency Building Code 2006 in order to comply with the Act.

He also said that a big part of power shortages could be met by implementing the energy conservation measures and without making any extra expenditure for which consumer awareness is the need of the hour. The state has sufficient potential to conserve electricity. Demand side management strategy adopted by Haryana includes both technological and managerial interventions. Assorted energy saving measures are being implemented alongside an awareness campaign.

Haryana Power Utilities had already decided to replace all the conventional bulbs and tube lights with the Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs). The arrangements have been made to ensure availability of CFLs in all operation sub-divisions on cheaper rates for the general public.
