The overall import of edible oils into the country stood at at 37.67 lakh tonne during the November 2006 to August 2007 period, up by 10% as compared to 34.21 lakh tonne registered in the same period last season.

However, non-edible oil imports clocked 5.30 lakh tonne during the period compared to 5.38 lakh tonne during the same period of last year – down by 1.5%.

For August 2007, import of edible oils went up by 29% to touch a figure of 4,69,234 tonne compared to 3,63,938 tonne for the same period last year.

Non-edible oil import reported a decline of 42% to 46,738 tonne compared to 80,808 tonne for the same period last year, according to data compiled by the Solvent Extractors? Association of India (SEA).

During the review period, import of refined oils decreased from 1.16 lakh tonne to 1.03 lakh tonne while crude oils further increased to 36.64 lakh tonne from 33 lakh tonne in corresponding period of last year.
