India?s cotton production in the crop marketing year that ends on October 2010 is now estimated to be around 30.55 million bales, almost 1.5 lakh bales (1bale=170kg) more than last month?s estimates.

According to the Cotton Association of India (CAI), almost 8.2 million bales have been exported in 2009-10 and the carryover stocks to next year is expected to be around 5.5 million bales.

The balance sheet drawn by CAI for the year 2009-10 projects the total cotton supply at 38.7 million bales while the domestic consumption stays at 25 million bales, leaving a surplus of 13.7 million bales, CAI said.

Gujarat is estimated to produce 10.2million bales of cotton during 2009-10 as compared to 0.9 million bales in 2008-09.

Maharashtra?s production of cotton crop was estimated at 6.45 million bales as against 6.4 million bales last year, while that of Andhra Pradesh was estimated at 5.35 million bales in 2009-10 as against 5.22 million bales

The association said it was disappointed that the government has brought raw cotton exports under a licensing regime and urged the government to move raw cotton exports back to the ?free list?.

The association also requested the government to issue licences to cotton exporters in respect of all export contracts, which were duly registered with the office of the textile commissioner before April 19, 2010,said the company release.
