Job satisfaction is the highest among middle-ranked employees at central and state government offices, public sector firms, foreign embassies and faculties in academic institutions. The reasons are not far to seek. Moderate expectations of employers from such employees result in less responsibilities after office hours and flexible working practices made them the happiest, said an Assocham study.

In a survey on Job Satisfaction Level, carried out by Assocham that covered 700 employees, 80% of respondents feel flexible working hours, plenty of leave facilities with reasonable perks contribute to satisfaction.

Majority of respondents felt that jobs that drive maximum satisfaction include rank holders of under secretary, deputy secretary and directors with the government.

Middle rank managers, senior managers and chief managers in PSUs are among others that remain highly contended and satisfied with their assigned job responsibilities.

The survey revealed that satisfaction levels were rising even in over 65% middle-ranked employees working in MNCs, IT giants and large Indian corporate houses in view of attractive salary package and conducive work environment.

However, over 40% of them said senior officers of joint secretary ranks and above with the government were among the highly tensed lot as their working hours have no defined ceiling. Moreover, accountability varies from normal hierarchical bosses to political masters and media, for which there is no specified time.

Ambassadors, diplomats and presidents, vice presidents, and other corporate houses including country president, country manager, director of IT, HR, technical and operations, have squeezed schedules that draws them to lower satisfaction in their work as compared to middle rank holders elsewhere, said 55% of respondents.

However, the most dissatisfied employees as per 85% of respondents are found in BPOs, call centres followed by engineering and construction companies, stock markets, textile and garment manufacturers, railways, FMCG, export houses, retail malls and multiplexes, hotels, transporters, etc. in view of longer working hours, higher targets to achieve with great expectations.

The key factors that dissatisfies the employees is work timing that exceeds 60 hours work in a week in India compared to 40-48 in Europe and US, attrition rates, stiff competition, higher targets with unreasonable expectations.
