It is certainly true that short-term remedies (?No free lunches?, May 20) do not work if the pain is long-term. It is more pertinent in the case of our public sector undertakings, as they are guided by government policies despite their nominal autonomy. PSUs face hurdles and remain subject to government?s whims even on insignificant matters. It is time India?s PSUs are professionally managed.

Bite the bullet

The proposal to levy cess on income tax in lieu of hike in petrol, diesel and LPG prices is both unjust and unfair. It means that income tax payers subsidise car owners. Irrespective of its political fallout, the government should take the bold decision of hiking prices of petroleum products. Let IT payers not be burdened with more tax.
