The Supreme Court on Friday gave the central government three weeks to file its interim report on the harmful effects of endosulfan, particularly on the pesticide makers’ plea to allow them to meet their export commitments.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia expressed concern over how the manufacturers would ensure that the exported endosulphan would not be transported back to India. Besides, it also wanted to know how the stocks piled up in the country after ban on production and sale of endosulfan could be destroyed.
?If we allow exports, then what if it comes back to India. I am first cautioning you,? Justice Kapadia said.
The apex court on May 13 had banned the production, sale and use of pesticide endosulfan in the country, holding that human life is more important than anything else.
It had also directed the statutory authorities to freeze the production licences granted to the manufacturers of the controversial pesticide till further orders.
