Minutes after the main accused in the Saharanpur violence Bhim Army’s Chandrashekhar was arrested, authorities have suspended internet services in Uttar Pradesh district for two days, an ANI report said. On Thursday morning, main accused Chandrashekhar, who is also the founder of Bhim Army, was held from Dalhousie area of Himachal Pradesh, Additional DG (Meerut Zone) Anand Kumar was quoted as saying by PTI.

Two members of the group were arrested in Saharanpur couple of days back for their alleged involvement in Ramnagar violence last month after one person was killed and several others were wounded in a clash between Dalits and Thakurs in Shabbirpur village. “Bhim Army’s Deoband Vidhan Sabha president Deepak Kumar and Saharanpur district president Praveen Gautam have been arrested from near Sun City Colony at Malhipur Road,” Saharanpur City Circle Officer Mukesh Chandra Mishra was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

The state police had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) recently, consisting of  about 10 inspectors to investigate 40 cases, which were registered between May 5 to May 23 in the district.

Chandrashekhar had come into limelight after organising a demonstration in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in protest against violence against Dalits in Saharanpur. The accused  had earlier said that he would surrender provided the police release 37 innocent Dalits on bail.

“I feel that the UP government has failed to address the issues of the Dalits. The chief minister has lost control over the police and the administration. There have been more cases of atrocities against the Dalits in the past two-and-a-half months as compared to last one year,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.
