Amazon Prime Members automatically upgraded to Alexa+ AI assistant but many want the older version: Here’s why

While the company allows users to revert to the classic Alexa by simply saying "Alexa, exit Alexa+", there is no way to prevent or opt out of the initial update.

Amazon has begun automatically upgrading eligible Prime members’ Echo devices to Alexa+, its next-generation AI-powered voice assistant, without requiring users to opt in. The change, which rolled out in recent weeks and was widely reported in early January 2026, positions Alexa+ as a free perk for Prime subscribers while aiming to deliver more natural, conversational interactions powered by generative AI.

Alexa+ promises smarter responses, better context understanding, longer conversations, and enhanced task-handling capabilities, and is designed to compete with rivals like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. It remains free for Prime members, while non-Prime users face a $19.99/month subscription after the Early Access period (available through January 2026).

Alexa+ automatic upgrade process and user reactions

The upgrade happens seamlessly in the background, taking just a few minutes with no user action required. Amazon notifies affected Prime members via a message on their Echo device and a follow-up email confirming the switch. While the company allows users to revert to the classic Alexa by simply saying “Alexa, exit Alexa+”, there is no way to prevent or opt out of the initial update.

Reactions, however, have been mixed, with backlash surfacing on platforms like Reddit (in communities such as r/alexa and r/amazonecho). Many users express frustration over the lack of choice, describing the forced rollout as intrusive.

Some of the common complaints include:

– Slower response times for basic commands like turning off lights or setting timers

– Changes in voice and personality. Some call the new tone “opinionated,” “salty,” or less friendly compared to the original Alexa.

– Increased ads and prompts promoting Alexa+ features, with some reporting a “flood” of suggestions even after reverting.

One Reddit user noted, “Despite repeatedly telling it not to enable Alexa+, I woke up to it being active — the voice was different. It’s unnerving that it happened without permission.” Others have praised improvements in conversational flow, but dissatisfaction dominates discussions around performance dips and unwanted changes.

Amazon’s strategy in AI race

Amazon unveiled Alexa+ in early 2025 as a major overhaul to revise its voice assistant amid competition from more advanced AI models, such as Google’s Gemini 3, OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 and others. The automatic push to Prime members aligns with efforts to boost adoption, especially after a slower-than-expected Early Access rollout. The assistant now extends beyond Echo devices, with recent expansions to web access via Alexa.com, deeper Fire TV integration, and plans for broader ecosystem support.

For users who prefer the classic experience, reverting is straightforward via voice command. Amazon has not issued a detailed public response to the complaints, but the opt-out mechanism remains available.
