Till date, the corporate earnings scorecard for Q2FY25 has been weak but excluding commodities, it’s broadly in-line. Weak numbers from India Inc for the quarter have led to the biggest downgrades in earnings estimates since early 2020, according to Jefferies. The brokerage firm said it has downgraded earnings estimates for 63 per cent of the 121 companies under its coverage that have reported their latest quarterly results.

Vipul Bhowar, Senior Director Listed Investments, Waterfield Advisors, said, “The notable downgrades in earnings forecasts in India can be attributed to several factors: weak consumer demand, cyclical economic conditions, decreased government spending, and adverse weather. This current downturn is part of a natural economic cycle, rather than a structural issue, and it is expected to improve in the coming quarters.”

Nykaa Q2 Results 2024 Live: Seasonality impacts fashion; beauty stable with some bright spots in house of brands, says ICICI Securities

ICICI Securities said, “Fashion growth remained subdued (GMV growth 9.7% YoY) in Q2FY25 despite ~28% YoY growth in ad spends given the delayed festive season. Beauty segment continued to grow (GMV growth 29.1% YoY) aided by ~42% YoY growth in ad spends. Management indicated discounting from brands is coming down, which we believe is aiding Nykaa BPC’s ad revenue growth (I-Sec est: >20% YoY). House of brands business (beauty) continued to outperform, growing 48% YoY in Q2 aided by strong growth in both Dot & Key and Kay Beauty. Fashion house of brands grew 10% YoY, in line with broader weakness in the segment. Maintain ADD given the strong growth outlook in H2FY25 due to the delayed festive season and strong wedding season.”

Britannia Q2 Results 2024 Live: Muted growth in urban areas impacts sales, sales Elara Securities

A report by Elara Securities stated, “Britannia posted 5.3% YoY sales growth, driven by 4.5% value growth, below our estimates of 8.0%, with an 8% volume increase in Q2FY25. Growth lagged due to a slowdown in the urban markets while rural sales grew twice as fast. Metro-urban areas contributed 2.4x more to the slowdown than their share in sales. Management attributed this urban slowdown to higher housing cost (22% of urban spending) alongside modest earnings growth. Despite this, the company retained its market share. Focus states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, outpaced other regions, growing at 1.9x with enhanced direct and rural distribution. Adjacent businesses of rusk and wafer expanded due to solid distribution, and drinks saw robust double-digit growth. Innovation accounted for 2% of sales, supporting product launches aligned with regional taste and premiumization.”
