Two-seater supercars sales to double in 3 years across India says Infinity Cars’ Lalit Choudary

The sales of luxury cars in India are just a small fraction of the overall passenger vehicle sales in the country but are said to have one of the highest potential globally.

In an interaction with Financial Express Online, Lalit Choudary, CMD, of Infinity Cars is optimistic that in the next 3 years, the two-door supercar segment (priced above Rs 4-4.5 crore and above) will almost double the existing market share.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of McLaren 750S in Mumbai. The two-door coupe is the most powerful McLaren car, and Choudary is confident that this vehicle will see sales of almost 20 units in India in the coming year. This translates to a growth of almost 30 percent over 2023. Interestingly, there are just 30 McLaren cars on Indian roads at present.

It is no secret that the demand for luxury cars in India is no longer limited to a few metro cities, but is spread across, albeit in limited numbers, in the country including tier 2, tier 3, and beyond. “The demand for McLaren cars in India is equally spread across Western region, Southern region and North & East region respectively.”

For potential customers, the average decision time differs between a year for first-time customers to a few weeks for mature or repeat customers. The waiting period for such supercars ranges between 6 months to a couple of years.

Replying to a query on the tentative customers for this niche segment, he says that it varies from industrialists, and celebrities to even start-up culture. The average age of McLaren customers in India is in the “late 30s”.

Lastly, when queried about the potential of electrification in the supercar segment, he believes that it is too early as the technology has not yet reached the level to meet the stringent requirement (lightweight, demanding performance) in the supercar segment.
