Mercedes to invest Rs 3,000-cr in Maharashtra: Minister

Mercedes-Benz will invest Rs 3,000 crore in Maharashtra, the state’s industry minister Uday Samant has said, after visiting the automaker at Baden-Württemberg in Germany.

“Had a meeting with the representatives of Mercedes Benz company while on tour to Germany. Mercedes Benz is going to invest Rs 3,000 crore in Maharashtra this year. This will increase the number of jobs in Maharashtra along with industries,” Samant said in a post on X. 

The minister said he had discussions with Mercedes-Benz Group management board member Jörg Berzer; director of political operations – external affairs Marina Krets; and director of sales and marketing, regions overseas, Martin Schulz.  Mercedes-Benz India executive director and head of operations, Venkatesh Kulkarni was also present at the meeting.

Mercedes is entering its 30th year in business in India and the current cumulative investment in the plant has reached `3,000 crore this year — Rs 2,800 crore invested to date and an additional Rs 200 crore  planned this year.

Samant also had talks with the Baden-Wurttemberg government representatives. Deepak Kesarkar, Maharashtra’s minister of education and Marathi language, accompanied him to this meeting. Samant said they discussed bridging the skilled labour gap with their German counterparts. 

“We are dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition for Maharashtra’s workers, equipping them with technical skills and German language proficiency for employment opportunities with German companies,” the minister said. 

Winfried Kretschmann, chief minister of Baden-Württemberg, Florian Stegmann, minister of state and head of state chancellery, Manne Lucha, minister of social affairs, Theresa Schopper, minister of education, Petra Olschowski, minister of science, Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, minister for economic affairs attended the meeting.
