Rahul Gandhi’s twitter handle ‘OfficeofRG’ has been the topic of various news outlets recently, citing a rise in retweets as evidence of a resurgence of Rahul Gandhi’s interaction on social media. However, a cursory glance at the twitter handles retweeting the Congress Vice President’s tweets does throw up some questions…are these automated ‘bots’ mass retweeting Rahul Gandhi’s tweets?

On October 15th, ‘OfficeofRG’ retweeted US President Donald Trump’s tweet praising American-Pakistani relations with a caption ‘Modi ji quick, looks like President Trump needs another hug’. The tweet quickly reached 20,000 retweets and currently has touched 30,000.

A close analysis of this tweet showed that these alleged ‘bots’ with a Russian, Kazakh or Indonesian characteristic were routinely RT-ing the Congress VP’s tweets. Further scrutiny of these Twitter accounts showed that the follower list was usually under 10 users and retweets comprised of random topics from across the world and those of Rahul Gandhi. Moreover, the content of these twitter timelines comprised merely of retweets and a lack of tweets which could be categorised as an original thought.

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘resurgence’ on social media also goes hand in hand with another news report claiming that the Congress had roped in Big Data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica for a more targeted digital campaign to woo voters. Cambridge Analytica was in the news during the US Presidential election cycle last year for advising Donald Trump in precision voter targeting based on online habits of voters in different states.

When asked about this apparent inorganic spike Divya Spandana/ Ramya, the new Congress chief of Social Media and Digital communications wrote back, “On Twitter one tweets and what happens after that is not in our control. You will have to speak to Twitter to get clarity.”

Fake Twitter followers and ‘bots’ going on Retweet frenzies is not a new phenomenon. An exhaustive report in the New York Times in 2013, mentions the burgeoning business of fake Twitter profiles and ‘bulk sales of retweets’. The newspaper quoted a reseller of retweets as saying, “Business is great…had hired a couple of freelance programmers, a kid could bypass Twitter’s defences.”(ANI)

May not be just this BOTS. People are facing reality with over promises and under performance of NDA and also lost focus on development and more on fanning communal sentiments, flip flops, poor execution, bad decisions etc. People may be looking to develop options, even if it’s RG. Today people are more interested in jobs and economic development and not confrontation on Taj, Tipu, Gau etc. Gurdaspur May be just tip of the iceberg.

Gujarati people will fight or revolt against few rules and changes. But they never take decision on current situation. This people always think of future. BJP may get some hit but 32 years reign of BJP is not ending.

Scared of guj polls ? Ppl of guj always voted for development which they will do this as well. But question is not weather bjp wins or not . Question is how much extra seats they r going get apart from getting majority . Frankly speaking RG does not have anything to say to ppl of guj apart from taking jibe at Modi . With this RG is Just getting wreaking which is not good for party which claims of strong opposition

Shameful journalism. If one digs into modi Twitter you will find a mountain of fakeness compared to this one. Why not cover that too financial express? You have become a blot on media.

Every body including workers or ground level members of all party know that other than BJP there is no virtue and their leaders are fooling them. They respect current PM and CM of BJP but washing their hands in the river shown by their party as they are obliged or have no where to go. The same at ude of our people on which britishers capitalised and today politicians without ethics are doing. Congress inherited politics from British so cannot change the DNA

Basically these kind of retweets is used more for b awareness and remember this will not get additional votes, one has to realise this clearly. Meaningful tweets which talks of his growth story for village/town/city/state will get a better mileage then retweet’s of sum rubbish statements or opposing stupid statements by state leader who has no vote banks. These are below the level of RG President to be. High time SM team of RG realise this.

Many educated and self respecting Indians will leave his country if Rahul Gandhi gains in popularity and becomes PM. It's a thought that sends you to a scary banana republic..one wonders what kind of intellectual level do the other Congress leaders except Sonia Gandhi have to actually project him as their leader. Rahul Gandhi's rise will also be a reflection of our country's shallowness and immaturity and how our political parties manage to buy illiterate rural voters to further their anti-nationa agenda..
