A Muslim PG College in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh has started yoga classes. According to a report by ANI, Lucknow’s Shia PG College has started yoga classes in order to create health awareness among students and staff. This development comes around 2.5 months after, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath had drawn comparisons between Namaz and Surya Namaskar. At an event in Lucknow in March, Yogi had said, “All asanas (postures) in Surya Namaskar, Pranayama activities are similar with the way Namaz is done by our Muslim brothers, but nobody has ever tried to bring them together because few people are interested only in ‘bhoga’, not yoga.”

The UP chief minister had also said that even talking about yoga before 2014 was considered communal. But things changed after Prime Minister Narendra took steps to make yoga popular across the world, he said.

On June 21, International Yoga Day would be observed across the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi would participate in the Yoga Day celebrations in Lucknow, where he would be joined by scores of roza-observing Muslims, who would perform various asanas.

According to a PTI report, at least 300 Muslim men and women, under the banner of Muslim Rashtriya Manch, will be among around 55,000 participants at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan in Uttar Pradesh capital. “More than 1,000 Muslims had contacted us about participating in the International Yoga Day celebrations, but at least 300 have confirmed their participation. Most of the participants will be observing roza, while performing yoga. In fact most of them are likely to arrive to the programme venue after Sehri (pre-dawn meal),” Mahiraj Dhwaj Singh, national co-convenor (organisation) of Muslim Rashtriya Manch for UP and Uttarakhand, told PTI.

Azam Khan, national president of Shriram Mandir Nirman Muslim Karsevak Manch, will also perform yoga while fasting. “I will be participating in the third International Yoga Day celebrations and performing various yoga asanas
(postures),” he said.

UP minister of state for Muslim Waqf and Haj, Mohsin Raza, will also participate in the Yoda Day event in Lucknow while observing Yoga. “I will also participate and perform yoga while observing roza. Both yoga and roza are good for
one’s health.”

According to Raees Khan, the UP and Uttarakhand in-charge of Muslim Rashtriya Manch, his organisation is trying to ensure attendance of at least 1,000 Muslim yoga enthusiasts at PM Modi’s programme. “So far 300 have already confirmed their participation. Most of the participants will be rozadars. Since 15 days, the participants have been practicing different aasans and postures,” he said.

PM Modi’s programme will begin from 7.00 am to 8.00 am on June 21. The participants will adhere to Common Yoga
Protocol.

It is a beginning of nationhood/brotherhood and respect for your own body. Nation has to move many more steps. Nirog Vishva is a ultimate objective.
