The Goa election results 2017 may surprise all parties and defy what the Exit polls have predicted. BJP looks confident of winning the state again, but AAP, Congress are no pushovers.

The suspense over which party between Congress and BJP will form government in the hung Assembly of Goa is over. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has met Governor Mridula Sinha to take over as chief minister. The results that were declared yesterday have shown Congress winning 17 and BJP winning 13 in the 40 member Assembly. Today BJP got a big boost in its effort to form a government in the state, with reports that Goa Forward Party may support the saffron party along with couple of independent MLAs. The BJP has also offered deputy chief minister’s post to smaller parties to woo them to support it. Party MLas have also written a letter to BJP president Amit Shah to send Defence Minister and former state chief minister Manohar Parrikar to be back in the helm, after current CM Laxmikant Parsekar lost his election in the state Assembly.

8.30 pm: “All of the leaders in cabinet wanted Manohar Parrikar ji to remain as the defence minister, however, after much thinking the decision was left with me, in party’s interest Manohar ji decided to take over as Goa’s CM,” Gadkari added.

8.00 pm: Parrikar will soon resign as Defence Minister. Making the official announcement, senior leader Nitin Gadkari said that Parrikar has decided to take over as Goa CM at party’s will.

8.40 pm: The Congress has finished with 17 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has bagged 13 in the Goa Assembly polls. Regional outfits like Goa Forward and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) have won three seats each. While the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has emerged victorious with one seat and the independent candidates won three constituencies.

7.00 pm: Speaking on the results, Defence minister Manohar Parrikar has said that state has delivered a fractured mandate and BJP’s welcomes people’s madate.

5.30 pm: MGP won in three constituencies, but lost two sitting seats Ponda — represented by Lavoo Mamlatdar — and Priol from where party President Dipak Dhavalikar was elected last time. The party retained Madkai, where its leader Sudin Dhavalikar won with a margin of more than 10,000 votes. It also won Pernem where its candidate Manohar Asgaonkar defeated BJP Minister Rajendra Arlekar and Sanvordem where its nominee Dipak Pawaskar trounced BJP’s sitting MLA Ganesh Gaonkar.

5.57 pm: Goa Forward Party (GFP), floated just a year ago, emerged a force to reckon with, winning three seats – Fatorda, Siolim and Saligao. GFP candidates defeated two BJP ministers Dayanand Mandrekar (Siolim) and Dilip Parulekar (Saligao).

8. 30 am:  So far no leads have been received from Goa, however, Manohar Parrikar is currently in a meeting with the top leadership of the party.

8.25 am: As per Indian Express, a total of 11,000 plus postal ballots are being counted. The EVMs will have to wait till postal ballots are completely accounted.

8. 30 am: Most pollsters expect that AAP may not win a single seat in Goa. However,  if they do, then they may win two seats at maximum.

8.20 am: Two counting is taking place at two centres, counting for 19 seats of North Goa is taking place in the state capital Panaji while counting for the remaining 21 seats of South Goa is being done in Madgaon, considered as Goa’s commercial capital.

08.12 am: The BJP may win the state. The fact that Parrikar and Laxmikant Parsekar did not face any taint of corruption worked in their favour.

08.08 am: The counting for the Goa polls will be in two parts. First phase of counting will have 10 seats in each of the two districts, totalling twenty. CM Laxmikant Parsekar’s constituency of Mandrem is in the first phase of counting.

8.04 am: Both BJP and Congress have claimed to be winning the state.
