The Republican-controlled House has taken aim again at President Barack Obama’s environmental agenda.

The House has approved a bill delaying an Obama administration rule setting stricter limits on air pollution linked to asthma and respiratory illness.

The House bill would delay implementation of a new federal ozone standard by at least eight years. Lawmakers approved the bill Wednesday by a vote of 234 to 177.

The White House has vowed to veto the measure, saying it would block efforts to reduce smog and prevent asthma attacks and premature deaths.

The Environmental Protection Agency says it will give the most-polluted states until 2037 to comply with the rule. But Republicans say a series of interim deadlines set to begin this fall are difficult for states to meet.
