The Indian stock market is closed today, January 15, and the reason has little to do with any festivities or global news. Instead, it is linked to a local public holiday in Maharashtra.
Since both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) operate out of Mumbai, any statewide holiday in Maharashtra directly impacts market operations. January 15 has been declared a public holiday in the state due to municipal corporation elections across several cities, including Mumbai. As a result, trading across key segments has been suspended for the day.
What exactly is closed today
Both the BSE and NSE have confirmed that there will be no trading today in the equity market and equity derivatives segment. The currency market is also shut.
In addition, the BSE has clarified that trading in commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipts will remain closed during the day. However, commodity derivatives trading is expected to resume in the evening session, as per normal practice.
This announcement came through revised circulars issued earlier this week. Initially, January 15 was only marked as a settlement holiday, which usually means trades can happen but clearing and banking operations are paused. However, since most banks are closed today due to the state holiday, the exchanges upgraded it to a full trading holiday.
What happens to contracts expiring today
There is also an important update for derivatives traders. Contracts that were originally scheduled to expire on January 15, 2026 will now expire a day earlier, on January 14, 2026. The exchanges have said that these changes will be reflected in their official contract files to avoid confusion among market participants.
Was this holiday part of the original calendar
This closure was not part of the original stock market holiday list released in December. It was added later, which is why many investors were caught off guard.
Such changes are usually made when elections or major public events disrupt banking and settlement systems.
How many stock market holidays are there in 2026
With this update, Indian stock exchanges will observe 16 trading holidays in 2026, excluding weekends. After today’s closure, the next market holiday this month will be January 26 for Republic Day.
Looking ahead, markets will remain shut on occasions such as Holi in March, Ram Navami and Mahavir Jayanti later that month, Good Friday in April, and Maharashtra Day in May. In the second half of the year, holidays include Ganesh Chaturthi, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali Balipratipada, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Christmas.
