It’s only been 13 days, but Sunny Deol’s latest war epic, Border 2, is already rewriting the record books. The film has officially marched past the Rs 400 crore mark at the worldwide box office, proving that the audience’s appetite for high-octane patriotism hasn’t faded. However, after a massive Republic Day boost, the sequel is finally starting to show signs of exhaustion.
Spectacular start and weekend revival
Directed by Anurag Singh, the film opened with an explosive first week, netting Rs 224.25 crore in India alone. This includes the Republic Day collection of Rs 59 crore, which set the stage for a solid theatrical run.
While the second week started with the usual weekday dip, the film saw a decent uptick over the weekend. However, the momentum has slowed significantly since then. On Wednesday (Day 13), the film recorded its lowest single-day collection yet, bringing in Rs 4 crore net. This takes its domestic total to Rs 290.75 crore net, which translates to roughly Rs 347.50 crore in gross earnings.
Global domination and record-breaking feats
On the global front, Border 2 has joined an elite group, becoming the 43rd Indian film to cross the Rs 400 crore threshold. In a single day, it managed to leapfrog over the lifetime collections of major blockbusters like Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 3 (Rs 392 crore), Salman Khan’s Kick (Rs 390 crore), and Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express (Rs 393 crore). By Thursday morning, it had even surpassed Aamir Khan’s legendary 3 Idiots.
While the official overseas numbers sit at approximately $5.8 million (over Rs 48 crore), the makers have claimed a slightly higher worldwide total of Rs 411 crore.
What’s next for the franchise?
Produced by Bhushan Kumar and the Dutta family, the film has a massive cast, including Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. Its current trajectory suggests a lifetime finish between Rs 450–475 crore. Reaching the coveted Rs 500 crore mark will require a ‘miracle’ second weekend, especially with new releases like Vadh 2 arriving to challenge its screen count.
Fans of the series don’t have to worry about the future, though. Producer Bhushan Kumar has already confirmed that Border 3 is in the works, ensuring that this legendary war saga will continue to march on.
