Congress MLA Uma Thomas sustained serious injuries on Sunday evening after falling from the VIP gallery at Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, where she had attended a dance programme.
She was quickly taken to a private hospital and placed on ventilator support.
Thomas, who represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency, was a guest at the event alongside state minister Saji Cherian. The accident took place when she reportedly tripped on a queue manager near the stage and fell approximately 15 feet.
Dr Krishnan Unni Polakulath, medical director at the hospital, provided a grim update on her condition.
“She has sustained injuries to the brain, spine and lungs. Blood has clotted in the lungs, which got injured by broken ribs. She is not out of danger and will be in observation for the next 24 hours. She was admitted in an unconscious state. The major concern is injuries to the brain and lungs,” doctors said, The Indian Express reported.
Uma Thomas became an MLA in 2022 after winning a by-election following the death of her husband, Congress leader P T Thomas. Her fall has sparked widespread concern among political leaders and the public, who are hoping for her recovery.
