Several areas in Chennai faced a power outage on Thursday night following a fire at the Manali substation in North Chennai. The incident disrupted electricity supply, affecting thousands of residents across the city.

According to several media reports, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) Managing Director Rajesh Lakhani stated that the fire started inside the substation. He mentioned that fire and rescue service personnel were actively working to extinguish the flames.

“The fire incident caused sequential faults on both feeders at the Manali 400/230kV SS, impacting power supply to Chennai,” TANGEDCO’s official handle posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Lakhani clarified that the fire was not due to an overload, as the power demand was lower than it typically is during the summer months. He suggested that an equipment malfunction might have been the cause. He further noted that 50% of the city’s power, especially in areas like RA Puram, Mylapore, and Pulianthope, would be restored soon, with teams currently working on setting up a bypass line.

He assured that the remaining power supply would be restored without much delay. However, residents in several neighborhoods reported experiencing prolonged power outages.

Residents across Chennai reported prolonged power outages. Several took to social media to express their frustration. One user tweeted, “TANGEDCO atleast give an update on when the power will be restored. You charge such high rates, but the quality of service is totally lacking. #Chennaipowercut.”

Another user humorously remarked, “Only moonlight for the rest of the night,” while someone else commented, “Chennai goes dark! Stay safe, everyone.”

One local resident shared concerns about the elderly facing health issues due to the prolonged power cut, stating, “The elderly people are suffering with heavy palpitation and BP (Blood Pressure) issues. And I heard that a lot of areas in Chennai don’t have power. Please sort it out!”

While TANGEDCO is working to restore the remaining power supply without further delay, the power cut has sparked a wave of complaints and concerns across Chennai, especially regarding the impact on daily life and vulnerable populations.
