While during the normal course of business the stock market remains closed on Saturday and Sunday, the exchanges have notified that as the Budget Day is falling on Sunday this year, the market will remain open.
“Trading members of the Exchange are hereby informed that BSE Indices will be calculated on February 01, 2026 (Sunday) which is declared as a special trading day by the exchange on account of Union Budget 2026. Markets shall remain open for regular trading hours.”, the Bombay Stock Exchange said in a notification.
Settlement holiday on Sunday
However there will be a settlement holiday as banks are shut on Sunday.
As per the notification, the traders will not be able to sell cash-bought stocks on Friday. Similarly, traders are not allowed to sell cash-bought stocks on Sunday during the Monday session.
Furthermore, the block deal session 1 will run from 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM, while the block deal session 2 will run from 2:05 AM to 2:20 AM.
Commodities and other trading
Apart from the stock exchange, the commodities exchange will also remain open on the budget day. In an exchange filing, the commodities trading platform MCX said it will conduct a special live trading session from 08:45 am to 08:59 am on Sunday to mark the Budget presentation.
The trading session will be conducted on MCX from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Further, the client code modification session will run from 9:00 AM to 5:15 PM.
Is the market opening on weekend for the first time?
This is not the first time the stock market is open on a weekend. Last year Union Budget was presented on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Despite it being a weekend, the stock exchanges and commodity markets were operating as usual.
Previously, the stock market remained open on Sunday, February 28, 1999, when the Union Budget 1999–2000 was presented by FM Yashwant Sinha.
