Demanding a CBI inquiry into the allegedly high-priced wheat import by the government, the BJP on Friday passed a resolution condemning the UPA government for betraying aam admi, the plank on which the coalition had come to power.

In a resolution passed at the national executive meet here titled Betrayal of Poor, Farmers and Labourers, the party alleged that the Centre had failed in protecting lives of the common people.

Hapless farmers are committing suicide across the country. The government has failed to keep at leash the prices of essential commodities. All these are hurting common man the most, the party said in its resolution.

Criticising the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the resolution said, His knowledge of economics has failed to provide succor to aam admi. He announced a package of Rs 3,000 crore for the distressed farmers, but it failed to contain the suicide trend.

Giving sense of its understanding the problem the party said, any government at the Centre needed to take certain steps to deal with the situation, but inaction of the present government is disturbing. In the backdrop of rising farm input cost, the government is first needed to provide remunerative prices to farmers on their produce. To protect them from debt related distress, it needs to expand provision of institutional farm credit from present level of only 36%. There is an urgent need to reform the farm insurance scheme to directly benefit the farmers instead of guaranteeing banks on their loans, the resolution said.
