Even as the government pushes for the passing of Triple Talaq Bill in the Parliament, the practice still prevails in the country. In the recent case that has come across, a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Nandauli has allegedly given Triple Talaq to his wife through SMS. The man who is reportedly working in Saudi Arabia sent his wife an SMS and gave her divorce, as per ANI. The victim, on the other hand, has claimed that she was harassed by her husband and her in-laws. “My in-laws used to harass me demanding for a vehicle, my husband ill-treated me as well. I received a message from him, where he gave me divorce. I have a son and somehow want us to survive. This is my house now and I will not move away from here,” the victim was quoted as saying by ANI.

She was also allegedly thrown out of the house for not fulfilling their demand. The victim’s father has also spoken up against the harassment. “Things were fine for 2 years. Then they started harassing her. Her in-laws threw her out of the house later. Then one day her husband gave her divorce through SMS,” said the victim’s father. However, the victim’s family hasn’t made a complaint yet. “We haven’t informed police. For us the divorce process is complete,” said the father of the victim.
Incidents of Triple Talaq have occurred even after the Supreme Court suspended the practice in its historic judgement. The Triple Talaq Bill was tabled in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, a week after Lok Sabha passed it by voice vote. The Bill seeks to criminalise the practice of instant talaq, after the Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment, set aside the centuries-old practice. However, the bill is currently facing a stalemate in Rajya Sabha.
Opposition parties, which overpower ruling BJP in the Upper House, are demanding certain amendments in the Triple Talaq bill. In between, there is a slugfest going on between political parties as BJP has accused Congress of stalling a bill meant for women empowerment. Congress, on the other hand, has said that it supports passing of the bill but has concerns on some of the clauses. Congress’ demands have been echoed by a number of parties as well. Some of the parties, including the Left and TMC, have demanded the bill to be sent to Parliament’s select committee.
