Women across the nation lauded Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) for recruiting its first ever woman driver, almost a year ago. 30-year old, S Venkadartha who came from Telangana to Delhi to make a living for herself and her family cleared her test and became the first female DTC driver. On year on, DTC has given another reason for women to smile. Not only has the corporation decided to hire women drivers for its services, it has also relaxed a few norms for them, according to a report in Hindustan Times.
The corporation said that a programme for willing women drivers has been planned where they’ll have to undergo a proper training but will also be given a stipend. Sakha Cab Operators have been chosen by the corporation to provide them with names of eligible candidates who would further undergo the training process. The training period may differ from candidate to candidate depending upon individual caliber. According to the corporation, it could be anything between three to six months. Relaxation in the norms has been done to encourage more women in this profession, pre-dominated by men.

While the rules require heavy motor vehicle licence and a minimum of three-year experience for male drivers, all that a woman driver needs is a light motor vehicle license during their training period. Age and height relaxation too might be considered by the corporation. Further clarification on the relaxed norms would be finalised in a meeting scheduled for the end of this month.
