Following Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel, the country’s second largest telecom operator, Vodafone India, on Thursday also offered to release more points of interconnect (PoIs) to Reliance Jio.
Vodafone said in a statement that it would offer three times more interconnect points to Jio. Though it did not specify how many PoIs it would provide to Jio, industry sources said that it has now proposed to offer around 585 PoIs against 195 currently. To support a user base of 10 million for Jio, the requirement is of 1,590 PoIs, sources in RJio said.
“Following guidance from Trai and clarifications from Jio regarding its commercial launch, Vodafone India has decided to increase the points of interconnect between the two operators by thrice and accordingly increase the capacity to connect,” the company said in a statement.
“Vodafone is hopeful that all issues that it has raised with Trai and Jio will be duly considered and resolved at the earliest.”
With Vodafone India’s decision to provide more PoIs, Reliance Jio will now be able to offer seamless voice services and connect to subscribers of the top three operators, including Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular. The three operators control almost 60% of the total mobile phone users in the country.
The development assumes significance, as Trai had on Friday last brokered peace between the top three operators — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular — over providing additional PoIs to Jio for supporting at least 10 million users.
