James Van Der Beek death: James Van Der Beek, headliner of ‘Dawson’s Creek’, passed away at the age of 48. Wife, Kimberly, who confirmed the news, sought privacy for the family and shared that he died peacefully. A statement issued on Wednesday read, “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace…”

She further added, “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.” Beek is survived by wife, Kimberly, and their son, Jeremiah.

Popularly remembered for his titular role as Dawson Leery, Van Der Beek starred in the show for five years. The WB’s ‘Dawson’s Creek’ ran from 1998 to 2003, for 6 seasons. Apart from playing Dawson, James Van Der Beek is also credited with starring in the teen football movie, Varsity Blues (1999), and was honoured by the MTV Movie Award.

James Van Der Beek cause of death revealed

James Van Der Beek, a teen show headliner, was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023. However, the family chose to keep it private, and only disclosed it to the public in November 2024. With no family history and was unaware that the screening guidelines had dropped to the age of 45, he had once opened up about it in an Instagram video.

The localised cancer only reached a cautious prognosis and had an optimistic 91 per cent survival rate in the US. In his 2024 video, James Van Der Beek said, “Cancer’s a wild thing…It really does force you to look at your own mortality and decide what’s important and decide really what you want to live the rest of your life without. And so, one of the big things for me was recognising how negative my self-talk was.”

What is colorectal cancer?

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), colorectal cancer arises from the cells in the large intestine or the rectum. What starts as precancerous polyps can be removed through screening, such as a colonoscopy. Given James Van Der Beek’s diagnosis, a stage 3 colorectal cancer would have spread into or through the colon wall, potentially to nearby lymph nodes.
