Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to shift Smriti Irani to the textile ministry clearly shows that he wants the focus on governance, not controversies.

Modi’s Cabinet reshuffle 2016: As human resource development minister, Smriti Irani had courted one controversy after another. From her degree row to Rohith Vemula and JNU rows, at one point of time, Irani had become the most controversial minister in the NDA government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to shift Irani to the textile ministry clearly shows that he wants the focus on governance, not controversies.

The other way we can see her ‘demotion’ is the upcoming UP assembly polls. Being an extremely good orator and a face with which you can associate BJP with, her presence will make a huge difference in the poll campaigning.

Incidentally weeks before the Cabinet reshuffle, Smriti Irani, who was once upon a time HRD minister, presented a report card on the accomplishments of the ministry’s 2 years. Though the report card claims that a slew of measures were taken for the betterment of education but clearly they were not enough to make the PM happy.

Though Textile ministry is being seen as a place where lot needs to be done and someone strong, with a broad vision is needed, all can be said is ‘dil ko behalane ke liye, khayal accha hai’.

Though what I am writing is totally controversial but according to me, to remain the HRD minister, Irani could have, atleast tried to remain less ‘controversial’ and ‘aunty-national‘.

Here are the accomplishments as listed by the HRD ministry in the 2-year report card. Now, you decide whether it was the correct decision taken by Modi or no…..
