An intense Western Disturbance is all set to impact large parts of north and northwest India between January 26 and 28, triggering rainfall, snowfall, gusty winds, thunderstorms, and dense fog, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system is expected to affect the Western Himalayan region, adjoining northwest India, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, whereas several northern states continue to remain under fog and cold wave conditions.

As per IMD’s weather alert shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Western Disturbance will result in light to moderate rainfall at many places over the Himalayan region, with isolated rain and snowfall likely on January 27. The weather department also cautioned of gusty winds of upto to 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, along with lightning.

Which regions will be affected by the Western Disturbance?

As per the Met Department, a fresh spell is expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh on January 27 and 28, with scattered to fairly widespread rain and snowfall. Isolated heavy snowfall is expected over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on January 27. Hailstorm activity may occur in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir on January 27 and in Uttarakhand on January 27 and 28.

The IMD also warned of scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the adjoining plains of northwest India and Madhya Pradesh during January 27-28.

Fog and cold wave predictions for North India

The IMD indicates dense to very dense fog conditions during morning and night hours in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on January 25-26, with cold wave conditions likely at isolated places. Similar cold wave conditions are forecast for Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh on January 25 and 26.

Dense fog is also expected at isolated places of Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal on January 25-26 and in Madhya Pradesh on January 25.

Delhi weather update

As per the IMD weather bulletin, Delhi, along with Haryana and Chandigarh, is under orange alert on January 25 because of dense fog and cold wave conditions at isolated places. It is predicted to have cloudy skies along with shallow moderate fog during morning hours. For January 25, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to be around 18-20 degrees Celsius, whereas the minimum temperature is likely to be between 4-6 degrees Celsius.

Himachal Pradesh snowfall prediction

The Himachal Pradesh government has issued a statewide advisory in view of the approaching Western disturbance, cautioning against heavy snowfall and rainfall between January 26 and 28.

“All departments have been ordered to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness to deal with any eventuality arising due to heavy snowfall or rainfall,” the Himachal Pradesh government said, as quoted by ANI.
