Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) handled a record 55.5 million passengers in calendar year 2025, marking its highest-ever annual traffic amid sustained demand and capacity pressure at the country’s second-busiest airport, operator Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said on Wednesday.

Passenger volumes comprised 16.3 million international and 39.2 million domestic travellers, translating into a 1.3% year-on-year growth over CY24 and a 7.6% increase compared with CY23. The performance came despite infrastructure constraints at the world’s busiest single-runway airport.

Peak Travel Periods and Milestones

Traffic momentum was driven by peak travel periods. January 2025 emerged as the busiest month on record, with close to 5 million passengers, followed by November with around 4.9 million. November also saw a key operational milestone, with CSMIA recording its highest-ever single-day passenger throughput of 1,75,925 on November 29. The October–December quarter was the busiest of the year, with 14.36 million passengers handled.

Operational intensity rose in tandem. CSMIA handled 3,31,011 air traffic movements (ATMs) during CY25, including 92,141 international and 2,38,870 domestic movements. A new daily record of 1,036 ATMs was logged on November 21, underlining the pressure on airport operations. Overall ATMs have increased by around 25% since CY22.

Network Expansion and New Destinations

Connectivity expansion supported growth during the year, with new international routes launched to Almaty, Amman, Bali (Denpasar), Copenhagen, Fujairah, Krabi, Manchester and Tbilisi. Domestic services were added to Adampur, Amravati, Hindon, Jharsuguda, Porbandar and Solapur.

Dubai remained the largest international market with a 15% share, followed by London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi at 7.5% each. Domestically, Delhi led with 17%, followed by Bengaluru (10%) and Goa (6%). The Middle East accounted for 48.8% of international traffic.

Airlines including IndiGo, Air India and Emirates led passenger volumes, as CSMIA continued to consolidate its role as a key gateway to India’s financial capital amid rising demand.
