Barely had PM Narendra Modi announced his government’s intent to ban the Rs 500, and Rs 1,000 currency notes today and one of the first persons in the entertainment industry to react was none other than superhero, and the heartthrob of millions, Rajinikanth. PM Modi had today banned not just these two high value currency denominations, he had also unveiled their replacement, in the form of a new Rs 500 note and one of Rs 2,000. He had also announced that ATMs would be closed on Wednesday and some banks too. The entire surprise package was aimed at fighting corruption, fake notes and black money – ending this scourge was one of the promises of the Narendra Modi government during the general elections that swept him to power.

While the common man was quick to react to these massive changes that will roil the Indian economy, the showbiz sector was slow to react. But that did not apply to superstar Rajinikanth. True to his filmy avatar where he is blessed with super-human powers, Rajini quickly took to Twitter and heaped praise on PM Modi in a short and succinct message of support.

Here is what Rajinikanth tweeted: ‘Hats off @narendramodi ji. New India is born #JaiHind.’ What has added importance to this move by the superstar is the fact that he barely uses social media. The last time he used Twitter was in September and thereafter tonight.

NOTE: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has provided a telephone helpline that citizens who face difficulties can call in case they face an inconvenience in exchanging notes. These are 022-22602201 and 022-22602944 and they start working Wednesday.
