US is witnessing a big shift in sentiment as pressure intensified on the Trump administration on Sunday following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis. The incident has sparked outrage across the political spectrum. Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama called Pretti’s death “a heartbreaking tragedy” and a “wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.”

Another former president, Bill Clinton, also condemned the aggressive actions of ICE agents, while Senate Democrats moved to block government funding after the second fatal shooting in Minneapolis, according to The Washington Post.

Obamas call Alex Pretti killing a ‘tragedy’

In a statement, the Obamas criticised federal immigration agents for operating without accountability in Minnesota. “For weeks now, people across the country have been rightly outraged by the spectacle of masked ICE recruits and other federal agents acting with impunity, engaging in tactics that seem designed to intimidate, harass, provoke, and endanger residents of a major American city,” they said.

They added that similar tactics had already resulted in two US citizens being killed in Minneapolis: Alex Pretti and Renee Good. They criticised the administration for escalating rhetoric before conducting an investigation, despite video evidence that contradicts official claims.

The Obamas encouraged Americans to support peaceful protests in Minneapolis and across the country. “President and current administration officials seem eager to escalate the situation, while offering public explanations for the shootings of Mr Pretti and Renee Good that aren’t informed by any serious investigation-and that appear to be directly contradicted by video evidence,” the statement posted on X read.

The statement added, “In the meantime, every American should support and draw inspiration from the wave of peaceful protests in Minneapolis and other parts of the country. They are a timely reminder that ultimately it’s up to each of us as citizens to speak out against injustice, protect our basic freedoms, and hold our government accountable.”

Bill Clinton and lawmakers demand accountability

Former President Bill Clinton also condemned the killings, calling the events “horrible scenes” and saying they were “unacceptable and should have been avoided.” He accused those in charge of misleading the public about what was happening.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy said the “credibility” of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was at stake and called for a full federal and state investigation.

In a statement posted on X, Clinton wrote, “In recent weeks, we’ve watched horrible scenes play out in Minneapolis and other communities that I never thought would take place in America. All of this is unacceptable and should have been avoided. To make matters even worse, at every turn, the people in charge have lied to us, told us not to believe what we’ve seen with our own eyes, and pushed increasingly aggressive and antagonistic tactics, including impeding investigations by local authorities.”

The statement added further, ‘Over the course of a lifetime, we face only a few moments where the decisions we make and the actions we take will shape our history for years to come. This is one of them. If we give our freedoms away after 250 years, we might never get them back.

It is up to all of us who believe in the promise of American democracy to stand up, speak out, and show that our nation still belongs to We the People.”

Democrats say DHS funding cannot move forward

Democratic lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Chuck Schumer, Amy Klobuchar, and Adam Schiff, called for federal immigration authorities to leave Minnesota. They also said they would vote against funding DHS in upcoming budget negotiations due to the agency’s handling of operations.

They called the agency’s actions in Minneapolis lawless and said accountability is required. Senator Chris Murphy called DHS “a lawless department that is murdering American citizens and traumatising children.” House Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also demanded that federal immigration authorities leave Minnesota and warned they would oppose funding unless the administration reforms its practices.

So far, the Trump administration has defended the actions of federal agents. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the investigation into Pretti’s death is ongoing and that videos alone don’t tell the full story. Border patrol officials, including Gregory Bovino, argued that agents were trying to arrest someone else and that protesters and agitators interfered, escalating the situation.

However, Minnesota state officials contradicted claims that the person agents were targeting had a criminal history, saying he had never been in state custody.
