A deadly shooting inside a home in Lawrenceville, Georgia, sent shockwaves through the local community on Friday morning. The incident took place after a suspected family dispute escalated into violence. An Indian national was among four people killed in the incident, while the alleged shooter, identified as Vijay Kumar, has been taken into custody by authorities.
Even as investigators piece together what led to the tragedy, the incident has also brought to light a moment of extraordinary presence of mind by a 12-year-old boy, whose emergency call helped in saving the lives of three younger children.
What happened?
Authorities have said the investigation is ongoing and the motive is still being formally examined, though early findings point to a family dispute that spiralled out of control.
In their statement, they also praised the ‘quick thinking’ of Kumar’s 12-year-old son whose quiet act of bravery amid fear and chaos ensured the survival of all the children present at the scene.
Three children aged 12, 10 and 7 were inside the house when the shooting began. Terrified, they ran into a closet and hid in the dark. From that confined space, the eldest child made a 911 emergency call, giving police just enough information to reach the house within minutes.
That call saved their lives.
A call in the dark that changed everything
Officers responded to a distress call at around 2.30 am local time on Friday at a home located in the 1000 block of Brook Ivy Court. When police arrived minutes later, they found four adults dead from gunshot wounds and launched an operation to arrest the accused Vijay Kumar.
State officers later tracked Vijay Kumar to a nearby wooded area using an official K‑9 unit, where he was arrested without resistance.
Investigators later confirmed that it was Kumar and Dogra’s 12‑year‑old child who had called emergency services. That single call ensured that officers reached the home quickly, preventing further harm.
The three children were found physically unharmed and were later placed in the care of a family member. Authorities have since described their survival as the result of quick thinking from Kumar’s 12 year-old son whose extraordinary courage helped him save three young lives.
What happened to Vijay Kumar?
Following his arrest, Kumar has been charged by the police with four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony murder, four counts of malice murder, one count of first-degree cruelty to children and two counts of third-degree cruelty to children.
Expressing grief over the incident, the Consulate General of India in Atlanta said the suspected shooter has been arrested and that all possible help is being provided to the affected family.
“We are deeply grieved by a tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute, in which an Indian national was among the victims. The alleged shooter has been arrested, and all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family,” the consulate posted on X earlier today.
