The income tax authorities have filed 3,909 cases for violation of direct tax laws in different parts of the country till December 31, 2014, the finance ministry had informed Parliament on Tuesday.

1) Pending appeals: 2,22,691 appeals are pending before the I-T department as on December 31, 2014 while 34,578 and 5,849 appeals are pending before various high courts and the Supreme Court, respectively as on June 30, last year.

2) Maximum number of cases: Mumbai leads various regions of the country in having the highest number of cases filed by the I-T department with 546 cases, while the Guwahati region witnessed the least number of seven cases.

3) Minimum number of cases: While Guwahati region of the I-T department are prosecuting seven cases, the Bhubaneswar zone has filed 72 cases and Hyderabad zone 34 cases, the finance ministry pointed out.
