Delhi Election 2025 Live Updates: BJP's Parvesh Verma Dunks Kejriwal's Effigy in Yamuna, Accuses AAP of Failing to Clean the River
BJP candidate from New Delhi, Parvesh Verma, created a stir by immersing an effigy of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the murky waters of the Yamuna. Verma's act was in protest against Kejriwal's unfulfilled promise to clean the river, which he had claimed would be fit for a dip by the public.
In response, AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar criticized Verma, accusing him of "stooping to such antics" for publicity. She added that despite his efforts, Verma has failed to attract attention, claiming the BJP had effectively ended his political career by fielding him against Kejriwal.
Speaking to reporters at the riverbank near ITO, Verma slammed the AAP government for its inability to clean the Yamuna. "After 11 years in power and Rs 8,000 crore spent, the AAP government has failed to deliver on its promise. This is the biggest betrayal to the people of Delhi," he stated.
Verma emphasized that while Kejriwal had promised to clean the Yamuna by 2025, the situation has worsened instead. "By immersing his effigy, we are exposing his failure to the people of Delhi," he added.
During his campaigns for the Delhi Assembly elections, Kejriwal admitted his inability to fulfil the river cleanup promise, but assured the public that the Yamuna would be cleaned within two to three years if AAP returns to power.
Verma, however, remained critical of Kejriwal’s tenure as Chief Minister, calling it filled with "hollow promises and false claims." He accused the AAP leader of lacking the intent and capability to clean the Yamuna, stating that his effigy immersion was a reminder to Delhi's residents to free the city from "deceitful promises."
Verma concluded that his demonstration aimed to highlight the "failures" of Kejriwal and the AAP government, sending a strong message that the problems of Delhi will remain unsolved as long as politics of "lies and propaganda" persist.

In a video message, Hazare emphasized the importance of choosing leaders who walk the path of truth and can endure hardships for the greater good of the country.
Hazare cautioned voters against selecting "useless" candidates, warning that such choices could harm the nation. He also stressed that the election process should not be driven by personal gain, stating, "I drink, and it will facilitate drinking for others" is not the way forward. To secure India's future, he believes, sacrifice is necessary.
Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign, which began in Delhi, eventually led to the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2012, with Arvind Kejriwal rising to power in the capital. However, Hazare has repeatedly criticized Kejriwal's decision to enter politics.
Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with votes to be counted on February 8.

The Delhi Congress on Saturday lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) over a social media post by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleging it defamed senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi.
According to the complaint, AAP shared a controversial post on its official X handle featuring Rahul Gandhi, AICC treasurer Ajay Maken, and Sandip Dikshit. The post titled "Ek akela padega sab par bhaari" displayed Arvind Kejriwal's picture with the caption "Kejriwal ki imaandari," juxtaposed with Congress leaders labeled "sare beimano par padegi bhaar."
The Congress argued that the post violated the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951, accusing AAP of attempting to tarnish the reputation of its leaders for electoral gains. The complaint also pointed out recent legal issues involving AAP leaders to question the party's claims of honesty.
The Congress urged the ECI to take immediate action, including removing the post from AAP’s social media platforms, to prevent further defamation during the election period. Voting for the Delhi Assembly polls is scheduled for February 5, with results to be announced on February 8.

Shah assured voters that no welfare initiatives for the poor would be discontinued under BJP rule, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal commitment to this cause. He criticized the AAP government, alleging that they "did nothing in 10 years apart from betraying the people" and accused Kejriwal of involvement in a "liquor scam worth crores of rupees."
The Home Minister reiterated BJP's promises to make Delhi garbage-free, improve potable water supply, and elevate the city as a global capital. "We need to remove 'aapda' (disaster, referring to AAP) and strengthen Modi ji's hands to end this politics of lies," Shah urged.

"You insulted Sheila Dikshit and Manmohan Singh. Now you claim in interviews that Manmohan Singh was the most honest Prime Minister. Apologise to Dr. Singh’s wife. You begged Congress for an alliance. Supporting you on seven seats in the Lok Sabha elections was a grave mistake," Lamba said, speaking to ANI.

BJP MP Parvesh Verma slammed Kejriwal for seeking additional security while he already enjoys Z-plus security by Delhi police. He called the allegations a political stunt.
"It is now clear that Kejriwal is playing games with the public. Delhi Police provides full security, so why does he need extra protection from Punjab? This is nothing but a political stunt ahead of the elections.
"Kejriwal is creating a false 'security threat' to divert attention from his growing failures. He is scripting this drama so that later he can claim, 'I was attacked,' and the election theatrics will begin!" he said.

AAP has labeled BJP as the "Bharatiya Jhootha Party" (Indian Liar Party) and "Gali Galouch Party" (Abusive Party), while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hit back, calling AAP a "AAP-Daa" (disaster) and Arvind Kejriwal the "Ghoshna Mantri" (minister of announcements).
Congress, not to be outdone, has branded Kejriwal as "Farziwal" (fake) and a "Chhota Recharge" (small recharge) of Modi. As political rhetoric heats up, memes, witty one-liners, and spoofs have flooded the public sphere, turning the election into a battle for narrative dominance as much as for governance.

Delhi Election 2025 Live Updates: Dalit votes may split between AAP, BJP, Cong, say experts
As the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seeks to defend its stronghold in Delhi, Dalit voters have emerged as a key focus in the upcoming Assembly elections. With the Congress and BJP vying to challenge the ruling party, experts predict a potential three-way split in Dalit votes.
AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, is aiming for a third consecutive term, buoyed by significant Dalit support in previous elections. However, experts suggest signs of disillusionment among Dalit voters could affect the party's performance.
Meanwhile, the BJP has launched a robust outreach campaign in Dalit-majority constituencies, coupled with promises aimed at addressing community concerns. Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent remarks on BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, which drew sharp criticism from opposition parties including AAP and Congress, have intensified the political discourse. The BJP, however, has aggressively defended its position, further fueling the narrative battle.
In the 2020 Delhi elections, AAP dominated the 12 Assembly seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs), securing a significant share of Dalit votes and paving the way for its second term. This time, the dynamics appear more complex, with the Congress and BJP actively working to sway Dalit voters.
