A man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping an 8-year-old girl, police said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Mohammad Umar (28), reportedly resides in Delhi’s Mehrauli, PTI reported.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan, “On May 6, at 3 pm, a PCR call was received regarding the kidnapping of an 8-year-old girl at Kotla Mubarakpur police station. Staff was immediately rushed to the spot.”

Based on the family’s complaint, an FIR has been registered under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation was launched.

“The family members and relatives of the girl were questioned thoroughly. The teams started working on all aspects. We got vital clues from the place of occurrence through analysis of CCTV footage as the suspect was spotted moving in the area,” the DCP said.

After reviewing footage from several CCTV cameras located in areas such as Bapu Park, Uday Chand Marg, Kotla Mubarakpur, Gurudwara Road, South Extension -1, Pilanji Village, and others, authorities identified the accused as being seen near the South Extension -1 bus stop, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Police also examined additional CCTV footage from DTC buses to identify the suspect. Furthermore, they shared information about the kidnapped girl on ZIPNET, which is a police networking system used by neighbouring states.

On Tuesday, the police arrested Umar from the slum area of Andheria Mod and successfully rescued the girl.

During questioning, Umar confessed that he crafts small glass toys and that he noticed the girl playing in Kotla and subsequently kidnapping her. Following the rescue, the girl was reunited with her family and taken for a medical examination, police said.
