Financial Express Online on Thursday organised the third edition of the FE Healthcare Summit. The fourth session, ‘Diagnostics: Changing competition landscape & new imperatives’, focused on new waves in the diagnostics industry.
The session included speakers like Dr Sushil Shah, chairman & executive director, Metropolis Healthcare, Anand K, Chief Executive Officer, Agilus Diagnostics, and (Hon.) Brig. Dr. Arvind Lal Padma Shri, Executive Chairman, Dr Lal PathLabs Ltd.
The session was moderated by Roshun Povaiah, Editor, FE Digital, The Indian Express Group.
Dr. Sushil Shah highlighted that the diagnostics sector has huge scope. “Chronic diseases, acute illness and preventive healthcare major branches of the diagnostics sector…new player after entering drop the prices….chronic diseases can make a huge impact.”
He also emphasised the new players who enter the market and drop the prices actually harm the industry.
On quality, Anand K maintained that its is important to enforce various acts to regulate the labs. “It is important to know how to leverage technology,” he said.
Dr. Arvind Lal highlighted that diagnostics is undergoing profound transformation. “Due to low entry barrier, we are witnessing the mushrooming of various new labs,” he said.
Overall, there is a need to have a focus on greater quality, he added. “While the sector was earlier unorganised, various organised players are coming in the sector…various healthcare players are now foraying into this sector. However, this is not long-lasting…the government has to work with the private players to maintain qualitative tests,” he said.
Dr. Lal also said that the advancements in diagnostics have led to better detection of various disease on time.
On standarised rates, Anand said it is not possible as very lab has its own capacity.
“We need to more training programmes and institutes for phlebotomists…and this will help in growth the industry as well as better patient care,” Dr. Lal said.
