At the Google for India event held today in Delhi, Roma Datta Chobey, managing director, Google India, emphasised the transformative power of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in propelling India towards a prosperous future. She reflected on the last 20 years of progress, noting that the nation has moved from long queues for train tickets to a thriving digital economy.
“In the past 20 years, India has surged forward, and Google has been in lockstep with many of you to bridge the digital divide, overcome language barriers, empower millions with digital skills, and foster a thriving ecosystem of creators, entrepreneurs, and developers,” Chobey stated. She painted a vivid picture of India on the brink of a significant digital leap, stating, “With every digital transformation, India achieves escape velocity, breaking free from limitations and soaring to new heights.”
Chobey highlighted the remarkable growth of India’s digital landscape, noting that the country boasts over 800 million internet users and the world’s lowest data costs. She emphasized the role of AI in enhancing economic opportunities, asserting that India’s AI-driven growth could unlock an economic value of up to Rs 33 lakh crores by 2030.
She provided real-world examples of AI’s positive impact, including initiatives like Miku.AI, a learning platform for children, i-Saksham, which mentors young women in Bihar, and Agrostack, supporting small farmers nationwide. “This is not just progress; it is progress with purpose,” Chobey remarked, as she outlined the ambitious vision of India becoming a $5 trillion economy.
Chobey also stressed the need to ensure that advancements in AI reach all corners of India, enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. “AI can dismantle barriers to essential services, ensuring that every citizen, no matter where they live, can achieve a better quality of life,” she said.
In closing, Chobey reiterated Google’s commitment to supporting India’s digital journey through collaboration and investment in human capital, stating, “AI will amplify our innate creativity and problem-solving skills. This is the frontier we stand on: AI for India, progress with purpose, powered by possibilities.”
