Elon Musk is reportedly diving back into US politics, potentially pointing towards a renewal of his bromance with American President Donald Trump. Having previously engaged in a war of words with the MAGA leader over the so-called Epstein files among others things on X, the Tesla CEO had relinquished his duties of posing as the ‘First Buddy.’ However, a new report indicates that he’s back in the political sphere revolving around Trump’s Republican party.
According to an Axios report published this week, the richest person in the world has started funding the GOP’s House and Senate campaigns for the 2026 midterms. Musk mounting up his support for Republicans comes amid chatter that his war of words with Trump may have settled down.
It adds to his last month’s appearance at the president’s black-tie dinner for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, marking his first return to the White House since he renounced his role in the Trump administration.
Elon Musk back to funding Republican midterms: Report
Two sources with knowledge of the development told Axios that the Tesla and SpaceX boss has cut big checks to potentially help Republicans win congressional races in 2026. The report further noted that he may eventually increase such fundings in the new year, which completely contradicts his prior admissions about vowing to cut down on political spending.
Insiders also told the outlet that the amount of Musk’s donations wouldn’t be revealed publicly until campaign finance reports are published next month.
The Tesla CEO, who emerged as the biggest donor in the general election campaign, said otherwise in a May interview.
“I think in terms of political spending I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” he said at the time, adding, “I think I’ve done enough… Well, if I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I’ll do it. I don’t currently see a reason.”

At one point, Musk even mounted up plans to launch a third political party in the US to challenge Republicans and Democrats amid his feud with Trump. His former position as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) even ramped up backlash against him, claiming this his focus on his companies was slipping.
In late May, he promised that he will be focussed “24/7” on leading X, Tesla and SpaceX, especially after a major outage impacted tens of thousands in the US and the world.
“Back to spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms,” he wrote on X. ” must be super focused on 𝕏/xAI and Tesla (plus Starship launch next week), as we have critical technologies rolling out.”
