Squid Game: America – Squid Game, the viral Korean thriller game show, has three seasons. With the third one making its debut in June, an exciting news made headlines today. As per local media reports and American outlets, a US spin-off of the Squid Games has been officially confirmed. With the filming set to begin in February 2025 and David Fincher to be the rumoured director, official confirmation is awaited from the maker himself.

My Drama List revealed that Cate Blanchett’s mystery character from the Squid Game Season 3 climax will not feature in Squid Game: America. The Western spin-off will be disconnected from the K-plot and feature an original show, with a fresh cast and crew. Only the titular ‘Squid Game’ remains the same.

The American spin-off will not be a remake of the Korean show, and the script will reportedly be written by Dennis Kelly. The production is planned in Los Angeles with locations across California. Original creator Hwang Dong Hyuk and Kim Ji Yeon, CEO of Pertsman Studio, are listed as producers alongside Fincher, as per local media.

While the world-building will remain the same, the show will explore US versions of the gory games, set in an American context to provide the viewers a unique culturally relatable experience. One of the most dominant shows on OTT giant Netflix during the COVID-19 pandemic, it became a cultural phenomenon. In fact, the landmark Netflix house also features huge Squid Game characters in its signature alley.
