If you have some urgent banking appointments scheduled for next week, it would be better to get them sorted out in advance, as banks across major cities of India will be closed on various days due to regional festivals.
As per the RBI calendar, banks across different states of India will remain closed for nearly five of the six working days next week, though not in consecutive order. Additionally, uncertainty over the closure of financial institutions continues in Maharashtra, as the state government has announced a public holiday on January 15 to conduct civic body elections.
Here is all you need to know about bank holidays next week and what to expect:
January 12, 2026
As per the RBI calendar, banks in Lucknow will remain closed on January 12 on account of Swami Vivekananda Jayanti. It is important to note that this holiday is applicable only in Lucknow, and banks in other states and cities will function as per their regular schedules.
January 14, 2026
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, banks will remain closed in Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Bhubaneswar (Odisha). Banks will also be shut in Guwahati (Assam) and Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) for the festival of Magh Bihu.
January 15, 2026
Banks in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada will remain closed on account of festivals such as Uttarayana Punyakala, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, and Makara Sankranti.
Additionally, the Maharashtra government has announced a public holiday on January 15, 2026, to facilitate local body elections. The holiday has been declared under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
This holiday applies to all 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts that fall under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
However, uncertainty around bank closures in Maharashtra remains, as no official notification has yet been issued by the RBI.
January 16, 2026
Owing to the festivals of Thiruvalluvar Day and Kanuma, banks in Chennai and Vijayawada will remain closed.
January 17, 2026
Banks across the country will continue their regular operations on January 17, which falls on a third Saturday. However, banks in Chennai will remain closed to mark Uzhavar Thirunal.

As per the RBI calendar, banks across the country will remain closed to mark the national holiday of Republic Day on January 26.
Routine Weekend Holidays in January
Alongside, banks will continue to follow their usual weekly closure. Financial institutions will remain shut across the country on Sundays- January 11, 18, and 25 as well as on second and fourth Saturday, January 10, and 24.
Regular Online Services to Continue
It is important to note that while the physical branches of banks would be closed, customers can still use their online banking operations without disruptions. Further, ATMs would continue to operate as per their normal schedule and timings.
