Results for the five states, including Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections, are out. While BJP got resounding victories in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the Congress managed to win Punjab. In Goa, even as it is the single largest party, the tussle to form the government in the state is on with BJP. Both parties are in talks with small parties in the state to form government. Today The BJP Parliamentary Party is meeting in which party leaders may discuss on news CMs of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

01:55 am: Congress supports BSP Chief Mayawati’s demand for probe into EVMs used in the UP Assembly polls. BSP chief Mayawati alleged that the EVMs were tampered with in such a way that whichever button was pressed, the vote went to BJP.

12:05 am: Congress’ return to power marks its second best performance in the assembly elections in Punjab since its reorganisation in 1966 when Haryana was carved out as a separate state. The party was one short of 78 – figure required for two-thirds majority in the assembly.
11:40 pm: BJP may not have emerged as the single largest party in Goa but was successful in securing a maximum of 32.5 per cent of the total votes. As per the data released by the Election Commission, the Congress, which bagged 17 seats to become the single largest party, secured 28.4 per cent of the total votes. BJP won in 13 seats, falling eight short of getting the absolute majority.
11:20 pm: Though his party drew a blank in the Uttar Pradesh elections, MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi today said it respects the verdict of the electorate and vowed to continue efforts to strengthen the party in the crucial state. “My purpose was to fight polls. We will keep up our efforts. We will work hard,” Owaisi, MP from Hyderabad, said.
11:00 pm: Giving his reaction to the massive loss of face by the Samajwadi Party and Congress today when they lost by a huge margin to the BJP in which the Narendra Modi powered party won as many as 325 seats, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today attributed the loss to the failure of opposition parties in forging a grand coalition besides not being able to generate a strong protest against demonetisation. Kumar, the Janata Dal (United) president, also saw a major section of backward classes lending support to the saffron party, while other parties failed to mobilise them. The “failure” of non-BJP parties to forge a Bihar-like mega alliance in Uttar Pradesh was a factor responsible for their defeat, Kumar said as he congratulated the BJP for victory in UP and Uttarakhand assembly polls.
10:40 pm: Sacked AAP minister Sandeep Kumar, who was arrested on charges of rape, today sniped at the party leadership over its disappointing performance in the Punjab Assembly polls. In a series of tweets, without taking any name, Kumar appeared to train his guns at the AAP leadership while congratulating the Congress over its emergence with a “huge mandate”. “A lot of people will learn a lesson from the mandate. While BSP’s tally has come down from 80 to 20 in 5 years, Congress too has failed to save itself despite forming an alliance with SP. Both these parties now face an existential crisis.

8:42 am: The trends show that Irom Sharmila who is doing a debut at state elections today is trailing in the state. Irom Sharmila, while casting her vote in the first phase of elections had said that she is confident of her win. If Congress wins the elections this time around it would be their 4th term in a row.

7:40 am: “Counting is the conclusion of the long drawn electoral process, which the commission had launched on January 4. Voters’ political choice must be correctly reflected during the counting process and ensured that the counting is done transparently according to the rules, free from any kind of malpractices. First stage was bringing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from the polling stations to the strong room. These strong rooms are under the protection and security cover of central police forces. They are covered by CCTVs, televisions and LED facilities. Political parties and candidates have also been given an opportunity to keep an eye on the strong rooms, so, that there is no malpractice done,” the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi has said.

6:40 am: A three-tier security arrangement has been made in and around the counting centres.
6:30 am: Only central forces will be deployed inside the counting centres while local police will be deployed in the outer circle and forces from other states will be around the centres to prevent entry of any unauthorised persons. A senior magistrate will be posted at the entrance to control the crowd and regulate the entry.
6:20 am: The 100-metre area around a counting premise or campus is to be demarcated as pedestrian zone and no vehicles shall be allowed within this perimeter. Additional CCTV cameras will be installed at locations from where the carrying of EVMs from strong rooms to the counting hall can be effectively monitored.

6:15 am: In Goa, votes will be counted at two centres in North and South Goa to declare the winners in 40 seats. In Manipur, counting of votes will be held for 60 seats.
6:10 am: Votes will be counted at 54 centers in 27 locations set up for election to 117-member Punjab Assembly.
6:05 am: In Uttar Pradesh which has a 403-member assembly, 78 counting centres have been set up in 75 districts. 15 counting centres have been established in Uttarakhand where the Assembly strength is 70 .
6:00 am: Counting of votes will start at 8 AM tomorrow. Tens of thousands of central forces personnel were being deployed at the polling centres, including 20,000 personnel in Uttar Pradesh.
