Google is set to commence production of its Pixel smartphones in Tamil Nadu through a collaboration with Taiwan’s Foxconn, a report by Reuters attributed sources with direct knowledge of the matter as saying. The development came to light on Thursday and marks a significant move in Google’s strategic shift to diversify its manufacturing base beyond China amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.
“It will be making the latest models of its smartphones in the state… at the existing Foxconn facility (in Tamil Nadu),” disclosed one source to Reuters.
Foxconn, already a key assembler of Apple’s iPhones at its facility near Chennai, is well-positioned to extend its expertise to Google’s Pixel line. This move aligns with the broader trend of major global manufacturers seeking alternative supply chain solutions amid geopolitical uncertainties.
“The investment in Tamil Nadu is separate from the reported tie-up between Dixon and Google (to make smartphones in India),” the source elaborated, noting that the decision followed recent meetings between state officials and Google executives.
No official comment was received from Google, Foxconn or the Tamil Nadu government on the matter.
This strategic shift by Google comes as Apple intensifies its local production efforts in India. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has ramped up the assembly of iPhones in the country, producing devices worth $14 billion in FY24. Currently, India accounts for approximately 14% of Apple’s global iPhone production.
