In a bid to make governance a tad easier, the Tamil Nadu government in partnership with Meta has officially launched ‘Namma Arasu’, a WhatsApp-based e-governance bot. Released as a new initiative, the Namma Arasu bot enables citizens to access a wide range of government services through a simple multilingual chatbot. The service aims to make governance more accessible, transparent, and citizen-centric by leveraging the features and reach of WhatsApp.
Released at Umagine, Tamil Nadu’s annual tech conference, the Namma Arasu bot was unveiled by the IT and Digital Services Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan. The idea is to make it easy for citizens to access government services from their phones, utilising the latest advancements in apps and communications technology.
WhatsApp Namma Arasu bot: What it offers
‘Namma Arasu’ features a user-friendly chatbot available in Tamil and English, allowing residents to interact via text for maximum inclusivity. Citizens can access the following services from multiple departments, including:
– Booking bus tickets
– Receiving examination hall tickets
– Applying for or accessing social welfare schemes
– Paying taxes and utility bills
– Availing agriculture subsidies
– Renewing licenses
– Filing grievances and more
The platform integrates services from around 16 government departments, such as rural development, social welfare, agriculture, and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE). Users interact with a single WhatsApp number, selecting options from a menu to complete tasks without needing multiple apps or visits to government offices.
Are there more WhatsApp bots present?
Tamil Nadu becomes the third state in India to implement WhatsApp-based governance services in collaboration with Meta, following successful rollouts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan stated that, “By combining the state’s commitment to e-Governance with the simplicity and reach of WhatsApp, we are ensuring that technology works for every citizen of Tamil Nadu in the most simplified way, redefining how people connect and access citizen services.”
The launch builds on an earlier Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2025, marking a major step towards reducing bureaucratic hurdles and enhancing efficiency. Officials expect ‘Namma Arasu’ to particularly benefit rural and underserved populations by bringing government services directly to their smartphones.
