As a part of its business expansion and diversification strategy, the department of post (DoP) is keen on tying up with major transport service providers and logistics service providers for sending postal consignments across the country.

The department has invited an expression of interest (EoI) from major transport service and logistics providers. A senior department official confirmed this move. He said the department had introduced logistics post to provide effective end-to-end logistics solutions to customers.

The official said the department has the exclusive privilege to have railway mail service in a large number of trains, which can carry logistics post consignments conveniently. The department also has a fleet of vehicles to transport consignments by road. But as a part of the business expansion plan, the department would rope in private transporters, he added.

Logistics post manages the entire distribution side of the logistics infrastructure from collection to distribution, from storage to carriage, from order preparation to order fulfillment, said another official.

Logistics post is an ideal service for sending large consignments including multi-parcels, just-in-time parcels, bulk-break consignments and goods of any weight, he added. The official also noted that while the parcel post offers weight up to 35 kg there is no weight limit as far as logistics post is concerned.

The department has also been providing comprehensive supply chain management services, leading to improvement in service efficiency.

Another official said, with a high growth in Indian economy, transport and logistics took a new dimension in any business.

Logistics post can cater to any demand for moving goods, parcels and consignments in terms of delivery deadline and quality of service. Further, it offers the possibility of monitoring the delivery progress at all times, he added.
