After the Lok Sabha, it is now the turn of the privileges committee of the Rajya Sabha to summon Indian ambassador to the US Ronen Sen, who incurred the wrath of parliamentarians for his controversial ?headless chicken? remark purportedly made against them.
Sen has already been asked by the Lok Sabha privileges committee to appear before the committee.
The ?unanimous decision? was taken by a meeting of the committee chaired by deputy chairman of the House K Rahman Khan here on Monday. The meeting was also attended by senior MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad, SS Ahluwalia, Shantaram Naik and RK Dhawan. However, no date has been fixed for Sen?s appearance.
The next meeting of the Rajya Sabha?s privileges committee will be held on November 2. The Lok Sabha?s next privilege committee meeting is scheduled on October 29 and 30. There are indications that Sen would be asked to be present on any of these dates.
During the Monsoon session of Parliament, Sen?s remark had created uproar in both the Houses and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and the Rajya Sabha chairman had referred the issue to the respective privileges committees. The external affairs ministry had also tendered an apology before the Parliament over Sen?s comments.
The Left, the Opposition and a section of the ruling alliance have been demanding the government to call back Sen for his alleged comments against MPs.
However, in his explanation Sen had said that the ?headless chicken? comment was made against journalists, but was not enough to convince the MPs.
